Select site after the autumn break. The site chosen needs to be uniform in species composition and have a consistent clover content across all plots.
Start the plots at least 1 m from any fence line and away from any obvious stock camps, tracks, etc.
Pace out the distances and peg the corners of each plot – the dimensions do not need to be precise as the purpose of the strip is to see if there is a response or not.
Run a string line around the pegs.
Place the fertiliser bags on the plots according to the numbers on the bags (1-7).
Prior to spreading the fertiliser complete the plot plan showing the orientation of the plot and note any abnormalities in species composition that cannot be avoided.
Spread the fertiliser by hand (do not use a hand spinner as this will not give a discrete edge to the plots).
Mix the fertiliser within each bag prior to spreading. Split the fertiliser into two roughly and go over each plot twice, this ensures you don’t run out if just spreading the whole amount in one pass.
Excluded from stock for at least 8 weeks from mid-winter to mid-spring with a temporary fence.
